Looking for a new and exciting opportunity

My time at River has come to an end, so I am looking for a new role where I can make an impact and write some cool software. My ambition is to make peoples lives better through technology.

When I graduated from University 8 years ago, I remember the worry of venturing out into the world trying to find my first opportunity. At that time it was really about trying to learn as quickly as possible, rather than expecting to make a huge impact on my industry of choice on day one.

Lets not forget - 8 years ago was the height of the recession so finding a role was tough; especially when you have no experience and your cheap suit looks like it was fitted for a man three times your size.

Despite the climate, things worked out great and I found an employer in EDM Group who taught me a lot, not only about technology but working environments and people too. EDM Group was a great place to work and I look back on it fondly even today as the role that kick started my career.

Today though, some years later I look out of my window on a cold and frosty December Tuesday and in some ways I am the same as when I graduated, still looking to learn, still with some renewed uncertainty around what the future holds and all but unemployed again. The key difference now is my confidence in being able to make an impact, I know my trade, I love it and I am enjoying the process of trying to find the right role.

I spent the last four years working at River Agency in Gloucester, it was another great role with some of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, I am sure they feel the same way about me!? The best thing about River was the pace of development, the technology and the traditional development pathway which was sometimes found lacking in my first role.

In the later stages of my employment at River I spent 12 months working with some of the most talented developers I have come across yet, I learned a lot, and found renewed vigour for development thanks to VueJS and started to learn a whole new way of developing software; SASS product development, something I intend to pursue further.

Unfortunately this role, the team and the product has just come to an end due to redundancy. A well-known quote says "all good things come to an end", I suppose that is right, and while I am disapointed for that to be the case, I understand the reason and wish River the best in future.

So now, on this cold and frosty December Tuesday, I am back on the market and trying to piece together what I want my next role to look like. If you are hiring, I won't tell you that this is a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity, but if you choose to believe that I won't stop you.

If you are looking for somebody who truly lives and breathes technology and wants to use technology to make peoples lives better, you probably stumbled across the right blog.

I am not, nor will ever be the finished article, but I am always striving to get better. Software development is my chosen art form, I intend to keep growing, keep learning and keep creating.

Connect with me on LinkedIn, or message me through this very website, I am open, available and ready to make an impact; quite possibly with you.

Cheers, Tom.
